Minutes to Decimal Hours: Payroll Conversion Chart

To convert minutes to decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60. Payroll systems usually multiply an hourly rate by decimal hours, not by hours and minutes, so 7 hours 30 minutes has to be entered as 7.5 rather than 7.30.

That single distinction is the most common timesheet error, and it changes pay in both directions. This guide gives the formula, a reference chart, and the rounding rule that matters most.

The minutes to decimal formula

Decimal hours = whole hours + (minutes / 60).

Example: 7 hours 30 minutes becomes 7 + (30 / 60) = 7 + 0.5 = 7.5 decimal hours. At $20 per hour that is $150. Entering 7.30 instead would pay $146, a $4 shortfall on a single shift.

Common five-minute increments, rounded to two decimal places:

• 15 minutes = 0.25 hours
• 20 minutes = 0.33 hours

• 35 minutes = 0.58 hours
• 40 minutes = 0.67 hours
• 45 minutes = 0.75 hours

The four quarter-hour values worth memorizing

Most timekeeping runs on quarter hours: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5, 45 minutes is 0.75, and 60 minutes is 1.0. If you remember only these four, you can check the majority of timesheet entries at a glance.

Convert decimal hours back to minutes

Multiply the decimal portion by 60. For 6.25 hours, the decimal part 0.25 x 60 = 15, giving 6 hours 15 minutes. For 9.4 hours, 0.4 x 60 = 24, giving 9 hours 24 minutes.

Rounding and repeating decimals

Some conversions do not produce a clean decimal. Ten minutes is 0.1666... hours, usually shown as 0.17. Twenty minutes is 0.3333... hours, usually shown as 0.33.

Rounding each entry to two decimals is normal, but do the rounding once, at the end. Rounding every daily entry and then summing the week can drift by several minutes compared with totalling the raw minutes first and converting once.

Convert a full week

Add the daily hours and minutes separately, carry every 60 minutes into an hour, then convert once. Five shifts of 8 hours 20 minutes total 40 hours 100 minutes, which becomes 41 hours 40 minutes, or 41.67 decimal hours.
