How it works
Convert minutes and decimal hours
Minutes are based on 60 parts per hour, so payroll decimals are not written like clock minutes. Divide minutes by 60 to get the decimal portion.
Minutes to decimal
Divide minutes by 60. For example, 30 minutes divided by 60 is 0.5, so 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 decimal hours.
Decimal to minutes
Multiply the decimal portion by 60. For example, 0.75 multiplied by 60 is 45 minutes.
Common conversions
15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. Minutes to decimal hours has the full chart in five minute steps, and the four quarter hour conversions that cover most timesheets.
Rounding
This calculator shows up to four decimal places. Follow the rounding policy used by your payroll or timekeeping system.
