How it works
Read military time at a glance
Military time runs from 0000 at midnight to 2359. For any time from 1300 onward, subtract 12 from the hour to get the afternoon 12-hour time: 1430 becomes 2:30 PM, 2100 becomes 9:00 PM.
Morning hours match
From 0100 to 1159, military and standard time use the same numbers: 0930 is simply 9:30 AM. The leading zero is spoken as 'zero nine thirty' and matters on written schedules, but the value is the same.
Midnight and noon
Midnight is 0000 and noon is 1200. In 12-hour terms, midnight is 12:00 AM and noon is 12:00 PM, which is the pair people mix up most; the converter handles both edge cases exactly.
Afternoon and evening
From 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 to get the PM hour: 1300 is 1:00 PM, 1745 is 5:45 PM, 2359 is 11:59 PM. Going the other way, add 12 to any PM hour except 12 PM itself.
