The percent off formula
Sale price = original price − (percent off ÷ 100 × original price)
How to calculate percent off
- 1.Divide the discount by 100 to turn it into a decimal. 20% becomes 0.2.
- 2.Multiply that by the original price. This is what you save.
- 3.Subtract the saving from the original price to get what you pay.
Worked example
A $50 shirt is 20% off. What do you pay?
- 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- 0.2 × 50 = 10 saved
- 50 − 10 = 40
You pay $40 and save $10.
Common discounts on a $100 price
Scale these for your own price. On $50, halve each figure. On $200, double it.
| Discount | You save | You pay |
|---|---|---|
| 5% off | $5.00 | $95.00 |
| 10% off | $10.00 | $90.00 |
| 15% off | $15.00 | $85.00 |
| 20% off | $20.00 | $80.00 |
| 25% off | $25.00 | $75.00 |
| 30% off | $30.00 | $70.00 |
| 40% off | $40.00 | $60.00 |
| 50% off | $50.00 | $50.00 |
| 60% off | $60.00 | $40.00 |
| 70% off | $70.00 | $30.00 |
| 75% off | $75.00 | $25.00 |
| 80% off | $80.00 | $20.00 |
Doing it in your head
Take 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, so 10% of $80 is $8. Every other common discount is built from that: 20% is double it, 5% is half it, and 25% is a quarter off, which is the price divided by four. A shortcut worth having in a shop.
Common questions
How do you calculate percent off?
Multiply the price by the discount as a decimal to get the saving, then subtract it. 20% off $50 is $10 off, so you pay $40.
How much is 20 percent off?
It depends on the price. 20% off means you pay 80% of it, so multiply the price by 0.8. On $50 that is $40.
How do I work out two discounts together?
Apply them one after the other, not added together. 20% off then a further 10% off is not 30% off. On $100 it is $80, then $72, so the real discount is 28%.
Is percent off the same as percentage decrease?
Yes. A price cut by 25% has decreased by 25%. Percent off is the everyday name for it on a price tag.
